I spent close to ten months working on my thesis role, which was playing Adam/Samantha Turner in Anna Ziegler's Boy. It tells a similar story to the real-life case of David Reimer, who in the 1960s was mutilated from a routine circumcision. Not knowing much at the time, his parents were convinced by a doctor to raise him as a female, insisting he could have a fuller life if he never knew who he was meant to be. The play goes back in forth in time: we see Samantha struggling to accept the identity forced upon her unknowingly and we see Adam, a 23 year old trying to reclaim his original gender. I learned so much from this process and I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to share this heart-wrenching story. Comments are closed.
