]]><![CDATA[A Social Dilemma]]>Tue, 13 Oct 2020 05:00:00 GMThttp://www.danielkies.com/journey/a-social-dilemmaI feel I've been slowly working towards this the last couple of years but watching #TheSocialDilemma really reinforced and justified some things for me, so I'm putting it into action:

I've turned off all social media notifications from my phone.

I have been & will continue to educate myself from unbiased news sources.

I'm working on taking a deeper look into social media platforms to see how much data is being collected on me & how many unknown people/sources I am "following" that provide manipulating information.

I'm still here! I will continue to check-in with the world, but it's time I say "goodbye" to a majority of social media platforms whose business models aim to entrance us. I don't want to live my life seeking social validation while being exposed to misinformation and divisive content.

In 2020, we've seen a massive increase in virtual communication. Please know this post doesn't mean I aim to disconnect from you! It's time for me to focus on creating more meaningful interactions (write/text, call, email, video chat) rather than scroll news feeds and communicate with others on platforms overflowing with the above mentioned content.

I look forward to connecting in a more meaningful way with you soon.

I am thrilled to be a part of Kane Repertory Theatre’s workshop reading of Vow Keepers, a new play written by David Valdes & directed by Ansley Valentine. This is a one night only event streaming LIVE (and free) on Wednesday, July 15th at 7:30 PM (CST)!

SYNOPSIS: When a young gay couple wake up on their wedding morning, a couple in their sixties appear in their hotel room, having time-traveled to talk the younger pair out of it, in a comedy about marriage in our time. Think of it as Dr. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.

Checking in — The last 6 weeks have been extremely difficult both mentally & emotionally. The prior six months had been a huge transition period for me - processing grad school, settling into my new apartment, securing work, pursuing my artistry, getting adjusted to new routines & transportation...to name a few! I was finally starting to feel settled when everything changed. I lost three different jobs and five acting gigs that were either ongoing or upcoming. I was also in the process of becoming a permanent employee for one job I loved dearly. While I don’t want to harp on the negative & I’m aware countless others are in same situations or worse, I’m just checking in to say that it’s been tough, but I’m doing a lot better now. I’m grateful to have landed a temp job as an essential worker portioning, bagging and shipping food out during this time. I’m finding little moments each day where I can take in the beauty of the world amongst all the chaos. I’m just trying to take each new day as it comes. I haven’t had a lot of energy lately, but I know it will come back. I’m trying to give into slowing down for a bit from the fast-paced life I love to live. All that to say, I’m reminded that somehow, someday, everything will be OK. #EWBOK ​

]]><![CDATA[Happy New Year!]]>Wed, 01 Jan 2020 08:00:00 GMThttp://www.danielkies.com/journey/happy-new-yearLooking back, the last decade has been quite the journey. While it's been quite a gradual discovery, here are a couple things I'm leaving this decade with:

I completely deconstructed myself! I found out who I am & why I am the way I am, reconstructing myself, learning to celebrate ME.
I've learned what kind of art I want to create. 
I've discovered how big the world really is from the tiny bubble of a world I grew up in.
I've solidified what I believe in and learned to own my points of view for what they are.

The last 10 years have mainly been spent in training. I spent 4 of those years completing my Bachelors in Musical Theatre and 3 more of those years completing my Masters of Fine Arts in Acting. When I think about 2020 and the next decade to come, I am reminded of how far I've come and inspired to keep pressing on in this journey. For me, 2020 is the year of Patience, Perseverance & Pressing Forward.
